Instructions
1. Brown the ground beef. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook for 7–8 minutes, breaking it into small crumbles with a spatula until fully browned.
2. Season the beef. Drain any excess grease. Add the taco seasoning and ⅓ cup water, stirring until evenly combined. Simmer for 3–5 minutes until the liquid reduces and the beef is coated in a flavorful sauce. Remove from the heat and let cool slightly.
3. Prepare the creamy taco dressing. In a medium mixing bowl, combine the sour cream, mayonnaise, salsa, taco sauce, lime juice, taco seasoning, and garlic powder. Whisk until smooth and creamy. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.
4. Prepare the vegetables. Wash and thoroughly dry the lettuce before chopping it into bite-sized pieces. Dice the tomatoes and red onion. If using avocado, dice it shortly before serving to keep it fresh.
5. Create the first salad layer. Spread half of the chopped lettuce evenly across the bottom of a large serving bowl.
6. Add the seasoned beef. Spoon half of the slightly cooled taco beef over the lettuce, distributing it evenly.
7. Layer the toppings. Add half of the diced tomatoes, red onion, shredded cheddar cheese, and optional black beans and corn.
8. Add some crunch. Sprinkle a portion of the lightly crushed Doritos over the salad.
9. Repeat the layers. Add the remaining lettuce, seasoned beef, tomatoes, red onion, cheddar cheese, and any remaining beans or corn.
10. Drizzle with dressing. Spoon the creamy taco dressing over the salad, allowing it to settle between the layers. Reserve a little dressing for serving if desired.
11. Finish the salad. Top with the remaining Doritos, diced avocado, chopped cilantro, and an extra sprinkle of cheddar cheese.
12. Serve immediately. Gently toss the salad just before serving, or keep the layers intact and let everyone scoop their own portion.

Tips
-
Add Doritos at the last minute. For the crispiest texture, sprinkle the chips over the salad immediately before serving. Adding them too early can make them soggy.
-
Dry the lettuce thoroughly. Excess water can dilute the creamy dressing and make the salad watery.
-
Allow the beef to cool slightly. Very hot ground beef can wilt the lettuce, so let it rest for a few minutes before assembling the salad.
-
Use freshly shredded cheddar. It provides a delicious cheese flavor and blends beautifully with the other ingredients.
-
Adjust the dressing consistency. If the dressing is too thick, stir in a small amount of lime juice, water, or milk until it reaches your preferred consistency.
-
Prepare ahead for gatherings. Cook the beef, chop the vegetables, and mix the dressing in advance. Refrigerate them separately, keeping the Doritos in an airtight container at room temperature.
-
Serve dressing on the side for parties. This allows guests to customize their portions and helps the salad remain fresh and crunchy longer.
-
Store leftovers separately when possible. Keep the beef, vegetables, dressing, and chips in separate containers so the lettuce and Doritos retain their texture.
